In the past decades, groundbreaking medical improvements have made a tremendous impact on our lives, thereby allowing people to enjoy longer lives. Though at first glance this might be seen as a favorable change, I am of the opinion that longer life expectancy is, for the most part, disadvantageous.
To commence with, the past several years have seen medical improvements ( tissues cloning and STEM cell regeneration), which have allowed individuals to enjoy longer lives and this might be advantageous in some respects. From an economic standpoint, as people who reside longer are more experienced than others, despite the concerns over physical well-being of employees, employers gain from having experienced and wise staff and this, as a result, gives rise to higher productivity. To epitomise, According to United Nations statistics, the number of people who lives longer in Japan is just over 20% higher than other countries and since most companies and factories are managed by old people, Japan's economy is being developed because of experienced individuals. In addition, As an individual, senior citizens can enjoy more family time. As well as helping raise their grandchildren, old people can be a much-needed positive influence on the young, who often lack supervision and guidance. In this sense, not only old people foster stronger family bonds, but also help young, working parents rear their children.
On the flip side, as advantages and disadvantages are like both sides of a coin, there are several drawbacks in the longevity. The chief problem with life expectancy is overpopulation, which is accompanied by a set of other problems. Since the global population grows, so does demand for food, accomodation. For instance, populous nations such as China and India might face serious shortage in terms of food and accommodation as a result of the longevity ratio. As for statistics, just over 300 millions people live without their abodes in India and all of them suffer from starvation and lack of food. More alarmingly, the environmental damage is likely to soar seeing as countries are starting to exploit more of natural resources to meet the needs of their growing populations. Since people grow vulnerable to illnesses as they grow older, it creates a burden on the healthcare system.
By way of conclusion, while there are some upsides to longer life expectancy following recent medical developments, I am convinced that problems ensuing overpopulation like a shortage of food and space, harm to the environment and setbacks in healthcare far outweigh the positives.
