If the subject is singular, the predicate must be singular too, even if the object is plural:

A range of punishments were used to force people to recycle
(A candidate may think that the main noun here is PUNISHMENTS. But it's just an object because it's used after preposition OF)
A range of punishments was used to force people to recycle
(RANGE is the subject here, so the verb must be IS)

The main aim of foraging ants are to supply their colony with food (ANTS play a secondary role here, so the verb isn't related to them)
The main aim of foraging ants is to supply their colony with food (AIM is the main noun in this sentence, and only IS must be used with it here)

Some other examples:

One of my friends like to cook Italian food

A bouquet of roses cost much on March 8

The percentage of international students have grown

Well I personally liked his answer!

'Every head must bow and every tongue must confess that he is the greatest of all time" in this field of sport I mean.

Presumably elder generation ought to be venerated in this way!

2023-01-23 17:22:14 The charts provided give information concerning energy use of the United States, including 5 major sources, from 1980 to 1990.

Turning to the details, in the USA, the most widely used means of energy was oil accounting for 42 percent in the former year of the given period along with 33 percent in the latter year. In striking contrast, hydroelectric power stayed as less used in both years, with a mere 5 percent.

The share of nuclear power, in 1990, was twice as bigger as that of number in 1980 - 5 percent. The use of coal as an energy source had upsurged from 22 to 27 percent by 1990. Simultaneously, natural gases' index was almost unaltered.

To sum up, oil came on top position upon other sources of energy, namely natural gas, coal, nuclear power and hydroelectric power throughout the period of 10 years.
