THAN is used when comparing objects, people, or situations. It often requires the usage of MORE, LESS, or Adjective+ER:

Young people know more about music rather than the elderly do
Young people know more about music than the elderly do

The Internet works faster now rather than a decade ago
The Internet works faster now than a decade ago

RATHER THAN means instead of something. The phrase is NOT used with MORE, LESS, or adjective+ER:

Teachers should advise or suggest than give orders
Teachers should advise or suggest rather than give orders

Many women prefer cooking with olive oil than butter
Many women prefer cooking with olive oil rather than butter
