What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages?

People now can enjoy longer lives thanks to recent improvements in medicine and healthcare. This development can be characterized as both advantageous and disadvantageous.

To start, a rise in human lifespan can prove beneficial in several ways. One of the most obvious benefits is more workforce for the nations of the world. Since more and more people tend to live longer lives and enjoy better well-being at an old age, retirement age can be reset to 70 or above. This means labor shortage will no longer be of major concern to countries, especially the ones with greying populations such as Germany and Italy. One other merit is that old people can enjoy more family time. It is true that most people tend to spend their young ages working, away from home, which means rather insufficient time for family. Despite this, having sustained their well-being with the help of modern medicine, they can afford few more years in the company of their children and grandchildren.

Nevertheless, longer life expectancy is not virtuous in all respects. As well as solving the labor shortage issue, such a development might also saturate the labor market for young people. As employers can retain old workers without much concern over loss of productivity, there will be fewer job prospects available for young demographics. This, as a result, means economic hardships for young people. More worryingly, increased human lifespan is bound to lead to over-population, which is often followed by a set of socio-economic and environmental problems. These problems range from food and space shortage to environmental degradation as a result of growing demand for resources.

In conclusion, while the main positives of longer life expectancy with the aid of advanced medicine are more labor force and more chances for senior people to spend time with family, the negatives can be limited job opportunities for young people and various issues arising from overpopulation.
