Sultan Ulugh Beg and the Samarkand Observatory

Ulugh Beg, which means “great prince,” was a title that replaced his original name, Muhammad Taragay. He was raised at the court of his grandfather, Tamerlane, and from 1409 was the ruler of Maverannakhr, the chief city of which was Samarkand. Ulugh Beg was the grandson of the conqueror Timur, who is often known as Tamerlane. Ulugh Beg was primarily a scientist, in particular a mathematician and an astronomer. However, he certainly did not neglect the arts, writing poetry and history and studying the Qur'an. In 1417, to push forward the study of astronomy, Ulugh Beg began building a madrasah which is a centre for higher education. The madrasah, fronting the Rigestan Square in Samarkand, was completed in 1420 and Ulugh Beg then began to appoint the best scientists he could find to positions there as lecturers.

Myanmar's military junta imposes martial law in 7 major cities, including commercial capital of ... (audio & text)

Over in Myanmar, there are no signs of either the protesters or the military backing down in their confrontation over who is the country's legitimate government. However, the military junta has imposed martial law in several major cities across the country,... banning gatherings of more than five people. Kim Hyo-sun has the details. The Myanmar Army has imposed martial law in seven cities, including the country's commercial capital of Yangon. The order also includes a ban on protests or gatherings of more than five people as well as a curfew from 8 p.m. until 4 a.m. The move comes amid intensified protests,... with hundreds of thousands of people calling for the military to hand power back to elected officials. "I want Aung San Suu Kyi and President Win Myint to be released quickly. We want all the people from the winning party, the NLD, to be released. That's what we all want." The military commander who led the coup gave his first televised speech since the takeover on Monday,... stressing that the country will hold new elections going forward,... citing irregularities in last year's election that have been widely ignored. "We are taking the State responsibility based on unavoidable reasons. We shall perform the duties in accordance with the provisions stipulated for the state of emergency in the Constitution. We shall build a genuine and disciplined democratic system. I would like to stress the emergence of a clean government according to the multi-party democratic system." He also explained the junta was different to previous military governments. He made no comments regarding Myanmar's ousted civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi. While confrontations escalate,... the Burmese police fired a water cannon at peaceful protesters in the capital. Non-violent protests demanding the release of Aung San Suu Kyi as well as the restoration of her government have spread nationwide,... with awareness of them growing after the authorities on Sunday lifted a brief ban on internet access.
