Begin your college search with 7 questions.

1. Do you want to go to a two-year or four-year college?

At two-year college, students can earn an associate degree. At four-year college students can earn bachelor's degree. Many students begin at a two-year college on the path to a bachelor's degree at a four-year college.

2. How important is it going to a public college vs a private college?

Public colleges are funded my local and state governments and usually offer low tuition rates, especially for students who are state residents.

Private colleges rely mainly on tuition, fees, and private source of founding. However, financial aid can make private colleges as affordable as public colleges.

3. How close to home do you want your college to be?

Do you want to be close enough for meals and laundry or to only come home on breaks?
Do you want to stick to a setting you're used to or try something new?

4. What size of college do you want to attend ?

Do you see yourself at a college with lots of students or in a small community?

5. How important is cost in your college search?

Remember, students don't usually pay a school's published price, because most students receive financial aid. If you really like a college, don't rule it out early in your college list because of the cost.

6. Do you have a certain major in your head? If so, which colleges have that major?

A college major is the subject area you'll spend most time studying. Keep in mind, it's okay if you don't know your major to be right now. You have plenty of time to decide, and a lot of students end up changing their major.

7. What's your ideal learning environment ?

Do you prefer small group discussions or listening to lectures?
What sort of balance are you looking for between studying and having a social life?

My advise as a brother :

- Base your college choice on how well a college fits your needs, not how famous it is. The effort you put in and the opportunities you take the advantage of once you get there matter more than the college you go to.
