2023-04-12 03:31:50 How to use Propositions in Writing task 1

It is very important to get Proposition right in this part of the exam.

Increase (noun) + in
Decrease (noun) + in
Rise(noun) + in
Fall(noun) + in

After such Nouns, we must use IN when we don't specify a number.

For example:

There was an increase in the number of cars sold in 2020
There was a rise in sales after appearing on TV
There has been a decrease in the consumption of sugar this decade.

Number, sales, consumption are not specific numbers

If there are a specific number after such nouns, we must use OF.

Increase (noun) + of
Decrease (noun) + of
Rise(noun) + of
Fall(noun) + of

For Example:

There was an increase of 70% in the number of cars sold in 2020.
OR
There was a 70% increase in the number of cars sold in 2020.

70% — specific number.
