What are active and passive vocabularies?

Active vocabulary
is made up of terms already in use and understood by an individual in speech and writing. These are used on a regular basis and are fundamental to a person's address. A person can use them with no noticeable effort. The active vocabulary words in an adult is estimated as 20,000 words.

Passive vocabulary refers to terms that learners understand but are not able to use. They are words stored in the verbal memory and are partially understood, but not well enough for active use. Passive vocabulary is usually more than the active one and is estimated to be 40,000 words for an adult.

It is also proven that the first 25 words are used in 33% of everyday writing, first 100 words in 50% of adult and student writing and the first 1,000 words in 89% of daily writing and speaking.

2022-06-25 20:44:33 Nowadays more people are choosing to socialize online rather than face-to-face.

Is this a positive or negative development?

In today’s world many people prefer communicating online rather than in person. In my view, this phenomenon is more advantageous than disadvantageous.

To start, online interactions result in many benefits. Firstly, this form of communication allows us to save a great deal of time as we no longer need to go through the trouble of arranging time and venue for the meeting and travel all the way there. Instead, we can have a video call and get to enjoy virtually the same conversation online. Another important advantage of conversing via messengers is that people can stay safe from contagious viruses such as COVID-19 by choosing this mode of communication. This is because in-person meetings always involve some sort of physical contact in the form of handshakes and hugs which can leave us vulnerable to the transmission of viruses.

Some people, however, are under the impression that people lose their social skills if they are chronically exposed to online communications since not all of the communication skills are actively engaged when talking online. This means such skills as empathy will be practiced less often and will eventually disappear. As a result, the quality of many social relationships will be undermined and certain relationships may even go as far as breaking down. Nevertheless, I believe online interactions are not very different from real-life conversations, and just as many people skills are used when we have a Zoom talk with our friend as in a face-to-face conversation. Therefore, it is not logical to assume communicating online would lead to worsening social skills and poor relationships.

In conclusion, the introduction of video calls and messengers has made our lives far easier than before and the benefits we get by using them to communicate with others are far more important than some minor issues they cause.

2022-06-25 09:20:12 Some people believe that there will be a reduction in air travel in the future.

Do you think that this trend is a positive or negative development?

It is speculated that travelling by planes will become a less common practice moving forward. In my view, this potential change can benefit the environment but harm certain industries.

Several benefits could result from a decline in the number and frequency of flights. The most obvious advantage would be a massive reduction in the amount of carbon emissions that planes are responsible for. It is common knowledge that the level of contamination airplanes cause is next to impossible to offset through any measures and conventional method of planting more trees does not seem to do any good. Therefore, the decrease in the number of times airplanes fly can go a long way in reducing their carbon footprint. Further, when airplanes crash, the death toll normally exceed hundreds, and fewer flights would mean fewer casualties of this sort. Because people would start relying more on safer modes of transport such as trains for their long travels.

However, a drop in the number of domestic and international flights would also bring about some challenges. The first issue driven by this change would be the increased difficulty during long-distance journeys. Fewer flights would naturally lead to staggering costs of flight and force middle and lower-class passengers to either drive or take trains or coaches when travelling to far-flung places. This would undoubtedly cost people more in terms of time and money. Moreover, industries including tourism and postal services that rely on frequent flights would also struggle as the cost of their services would rise dramatically leading to less profit. As a consequence, mass-scale lay-offs by companies in these sectors could result from this.

In conclusion, a decline in air flights could lead to improved air quality globally as airplanes are among the most hazardous air polluters. Nonetheless, companies working in the fields of tourism and shipping would suffer severely from diminishing profit margins due to this change.
