2022-01-30 10:12:22 'I understand' in other words (part 2)

I’m With You: you are in agreement with somebody, with what they are saying

E.g
I’m with you. We’ve got some issues with selling this product.

I know what you mean: I understand the point exactly. This could literally mean anything. You could understand somebody, or you could dare disagree with them. Or you could be very against them. When you say ‘I know what you mean’ it means I get it.

E.g
I know what you mean. It’s difficult to fall asleep if they’re playing loud music.

I See Where You’re Coming From: this is quite strange and it has nothing to do with direction. I understand what you’re trying to say; I see the point

E.g
I see where you’re coming from. Going to bed at 10.30 pm is really important for you.

I catch your drift: This is very very informal. Drift is what’s in the air. Meaning: I understand the point

E.g
I catch your drift. It’s annoying. It’s frustrating. And we should all do something about it.

Comprehend: We often use it in the negative form. This is very formal. You won’t see it very often. It is mostly used in legal documents.

E.g
If you comprehend the terms and agree to them, please sign here.

2022-01-29 18:56:08 "I UNDERSTAND" in other words (Part 1)

I Get The idea/point: I understand what you’re trying to tell me.
For example, somebody is trying to explain to you where a marketing campaign went wrong.

Example
I get the idea. I get your point. It would have been a better plan if we’d used social media.

I get It: quite an informal way to say I understand. That’s the sort of response that you’re likely to get from the kids.

Example
Yeah, I get it. It’s important to clean the dishes away after the meal.

Gotcha: I get you. It’s not a real English word. It’s very, very American.

Fair enough: I understand; that’s okay; it works for me if it works for you.It could be the negotiation at the end of a job interview. You’ve gone through two or three stages of that job interview, and the new boss is trying to tell you what’s expected of you.

Example
Yeah, that’s fair enough. That’s acceptable to me if it’s acceptable to you.

I hear you: I understand the point you’re trying to make. It doesn’t necessarily mean, you’re going to do anything about it. It’s a phrase the politicians use.

Example
Yeah, I hear you. I understand the concerns of the people in the neighbourhood.

That makes sense: this is quite a formal way to say that you can understand

Example
I understand. That makes sense. How can we operate this unless we have some rules?

2022-01-26 13:50:00 WAIT in other words

Let Me Think: use it to give yourself extra time to think or consider something

Example:
Let me think about that and I’ll give you a reply tomorrow.

Just A Moment/Second/Minute: Moment, second and minute interchangeable. They’re not really a period of time. It could often be much longer. For example, five minutes later you’re still waiting.
It has no reference to the particular time, we just use it as an expression to get somebody to wait.

Example:
Just a moment. I am on thephone.

Bear With Me: ask someone to wait and be patient

Examples:
Please bear with me for five minutes while I finish this email.
Bear with us while we try to fix these technical issues.

Something Or Somebody Will Have To Wait: use it when you have no time to do something or no time to deal with somebody

Example:
The report is just going to have to wait; I’m not going to be able to complete it by today.

Just Wait Until/Till: You can use either till or until there. Use this to ask someone to be patient for a moment

Examples:
Please just wait until I get a chance to discuss this with you.
Just wait until I get a chance to read the proposal.
I’m very busy, please wait until I have time to read the form carefully.
