2022-07-15 07:52:56 Children and Screens (level B2-C1)

The World Health Organisation issued new guidelines on physical activity and sleep for children under 5. The guidelines overall echo what many parents have been saying for years.

Generally, children should move more, sit less and get enough quality sleep so that they grow up physically and mentally healthy. Children between the ages of 1 and 4 should spend at least three hours a day in a variety of physical activities, and infants less than 1 year old should also be physically active several times a day.

The WHO says that kids between 2 and 4 years old should not spend more than an hour a day watching an electronic screen, and kids younger than that should not be looking at them at all.

words to learn:
- issue (send out),
- echo (repeat, say again),
- infant (a baby).

words to learn:
- guideline (a rule; advice),
- several (some),
- electronic screen (the ‘window’ into a computer/tablet/phone).

2022-07-14 12:15:46 Insect Ice Cream (level - B2-c1)

At a store in Cape Town, South Africa, food technicians turned maggots into ice cream. The employees make a juice from the maggots, add ingredients like cocoa, and put the insects into the ice cream-making machine.

An employee explained that this is good for the environment, as the maggots are normally thrown away or given to pigs. A professor said that people are willing to eat gourmet burgers made from insects, but they may not be willing to eat ice cream like this. He said that plant alternatives to dairy taste better and are culturally easier to stomach.

People who tried the ice cream said that it tasted like organic or vegan ice cream. The store wants to spread from South Africa to other parts of Africa, Europe, and then the United States.

words to learn:
- maggot (a soft, legless larva of a fly or other insect which looks like a worm),
- stomach (digest or eat; understand or accept).

Insect Ice Cream (level - A2-B1)

In Cape Town, South Africa, food scientists turned maggots into ice cream. The employees make a juice from the maggots, add sweet ingredients, and put all of it in the ice cream-making machine.

An employee explained that this is good for the environment, as people are recycling the insects instead of throwing them away. A professor said that people may not want to eat this ice cream because plant alternatives taste better and are culturally easier to stomach.

Some people tried the ice cream and said that it was good. The store wants to spread around the world eventually.

words to learn:
- maggot (a baby insect that looks like a worm),
- plant alternative (a food made out of a plant that is not typically made from a plant, such as a meat, milk, or cheese),
- stomach (accept – say ‘yes it’s fine’ and eat it).
