These days, more and more young people are choosing to study abroad. What are the advantages and disadvantages of this?
In search of more educational opportunities and new experiences, increasingly more youngsters have today been interested in studying in foreign countries, particularly in Europe and America. In my view, this practice is likely to yield both positive and negative outcomes.
There are various benefits to studying overseas. When students opt to do so, they are highly likely to do away with their comfort zone. This is because youngsters living and studying in a foreign country usually incur financial problems, experience feelings of homesickness and loneliness, and therefore learn to adapt to different circumstances of life more easily. This can also enable young people to build strong character, self-confidence, and independence, thereby helping them grow into mentally mature personalities. The more students develop as human beings, the easier they deal with formidable obstacles.
Nevertheless, this experience is not without drawbacks. For a start, studying overseas means that students live on their own without their family members and friends. This, in turn, may make it impossible to handle the culture shock encountered in a foreign society. Although some teenagers who are mentally prepared and strong overcome these kinds of challenges quickly, the same may not be the case for those who are introverted or unsociable. This is because many children, especially in the modern world, lack real-life skills like communication and negotiation, as a result of which it gets even harder to assimilate into new environments. Therefore, even though studying overseas might be a great opportunity to mature faster, it is not for everyone.
In summary, this approach has both pros and cons. While it can help young people to be well-prepared for various problems, its serious repercussions should not be overlooked too. Because of this, I highly recommend taking the youth into account.
