At a time when Saläh ud-Din al Ayyubi was a young boy, he was playing with other children on the street. Saläh ud-Din's father saw this and grabbed him in anger, lifting him up and saying: “I did not marry your mother so that you could play with other children, but to reclaim al Aqsã!”

His father was a tall man, with high status. He let go of Salah ud-Din, causing him to fall to the ground. After he hit the ground, his father asked him: “Did it not hurt?”
“Yes,” Saläh ud-Din al-Ayyübi replied.
“Then why did you not cry?” the father asked.

Sultan Salāh ud-Din al-Ayyübi answered:
“It is not fitting for the conqueror of al-Aqsã to cry.”
