2023-04-18 03:36:36 #Sex and #Gender

Sex are the biological traits that societies use to assign people into the category of either male or female, through physical ascription.

Gender is more fluid. It is a concept that describes how societies determine and manage sex categories; the cultural meanings attached to men and women’s roles; and how individuals understand their identities including, but not limited to, being a man, woman, transgender, intersex, gender queer and other gender positions. Gender involves social norms, attitudes and activities that society deems more appropriate for one sex over another. Gender is also determined by what an individual feels and does.

Sociology focuses on understandings and perception  of differences between masculinity (what society deems appropriate behaviour for a “man”) and femininity (what society deems appropriate behaviour for a “woman”) and pays special focus on the power relationships that follow from the established gender order in a given society, as well as how this changes over time.

Gender, like all social identities, is socially constructed. Social constructionism is one of the key theories sociologists use to put gender into historical and cultural focus. Social constructionism is a social theory about how meaning is created through social interaction – through the things we do and say with other people. This theory shows that gender it is not a fixed or innate fact, but instead it varies across time and place.

Gender norms (the socially acceptable ways of acting out gender) are learned from birth through childhood socialisation. We learn what is expected of our gender from what our parents teach us, as well as what we pick up at school, through religious or cultural teachings, in the media, and various other social institutions.

From Marxist Feminist Perspective, Like all social identities, gender identities are dialectical. They involve at least two sets of actors referenced against one another: “us” versus “them.” In Western culture, this means “masculine” versus “feminine.” As such, the “masculine” is treated as the default human experience by social norms,  the law and other social institutions. Masculinities are rewarded over and above femininities.

2023-04-12 01:31:03 #Impact Of #COVID-19 on #Socio-EconomicInequality in #India

Covid-19 had negative impact or I shall say worsening impact in inducing educational inequality, labour and income inequality. Also, it brought the underlying digital divide of the society to the fore, something that was underplayed(although severe).

--> Educational Inequality: ASER-2021 highlighted that although online content was adapted but it's impact was not similar to offline. Infact, the report mentions that shift to online mode of education has widened learning gaps between children from poor and affluent household. (Deprived due to digital inequality - Smartphone, tablet, internet).

Income Inequality: Decline in labor force participation. Increase in unemployment rate. Informal economy suffered. Construction and migration labour faced the brunt. Absence of well paying productive jobs. Impact on economy. Global slowdown. Firing even in corporate firms.

Gender Inequality: A report by the Center for Sustainable Employment at Azim Premji University in India shows that during the first lockdown in 2020, only 7 per cent of men lost their jobs, compared to 47 per cent of women who lost their jobs and did not return to work by the end of the year. In the informal sector, women fared even worse. Between March 2020 to April 2021 rural Indian women accounted for 80% of job losses. It was also noticed that during the pandemic, women's share of unpaid care work grew by nearly 30%.

2023-04-06 23:00:22 #INEQUALITY: A SOCIOLOGICAL TAKE

Inequality, similar to equality is seen in different classification.
It can exist in form of Political Inequality which may result from unequal accessibility of government resources and inaccessibility of the power structure. Such an inequality undermines civic equality in political terms.

Economic Inequality is result of unequal distribution of income and resources between different groups of society. For Marx this is the most important type of inequality, infact he views all sorts of inequalities that exist in society is result of economic Inequality in society.

Natural Inequality is seen as something which is not social construct but is rather result of biological differentiation or natural one.

Technological Inequality is inequality by virtue of unequal distribution of technological know how or unequal distribution of technological resources. This could result from both a) skill bias, as well as b) unequal accessibility.

Global Inequality: Dependency theorists believe that inequality is created by core country as it results into exploitation of periphery and semi periphery countries at the hands of core countries. The global economies have developed unevenly. In fact entire geographical region of Africa were left suffering in poverty and diseases.

Social Inequality occurs when norms of society endorse differential distribution of resources on basis of value that is accepted by society.

#CausesofInequality

Economic: rich-poor divide increasing. Increasing concentration of wealth in hands of few. The richest 10% of global population earns 52% of global income. Poorest 50% earn 8.5% of global income. High cost push inflation.

Political: Share of privately owned wealth increasing where as govt.'s profit decreasing. Govt policies in favour of elite. Heavy taxation birder on middle class. Govt incapable and improving employment.

Social: Gender bias... Restricting education or economic opportunity on basis of gender. Age, Ethnicity, Physical limitation ( Divyang), class, religion, sexual orientation, all these factors creates some restriction and hinders equal opportunity, hence breeds inequality.

Technological: Digital Divide.

Educational: Knowledge Divide.
