Let's fix a grammar/vocab mistake.

A lot of people seem to have trouble knowing the difference between...

1. 'some'
2. 'many'
3. 'a few'
4. 'few'
5. 'lots of'
6. 'a lot of'
7. 'several'

In this post I'll explain the differences and how to use them.

Firstly, let's look at 'some'. Some is useful in academic writing to explain to people that we don't mean 'all'. However, 'some' does not provide a specific amount, but it's somewhere between 'not many' and 'many'.

Secondly, 'many'. This one means that there are a lot, relatively speaking. It isn't an exact percentage or number, but it is a lot based on a specific context.

Thirdly, 'a few'. This means '2 or 3'. If you don't mean '2 or 3', don't use it. For example, if the question says 'some people believe', you can't write 'a few people believe' because you are changing meaning from an unspecified amount to a specified one.

Fourthly, 'few'. This means, not many for the context. It doesn't mean 2 or 3. It focuses on the number relative to the situation. In other words, it is not an exact number or percentage.

Fifthly, 'lots of'. This expression means 'many' or 'a lot of', but it is informal. Use it in 'letters to a friend' in general IELTS, but only there.

Sixth, 'a lot of'. This is still fairly informal, but not as much as 'lots of'. If the following noun is countable, I would use 'many' in formal writing. However, if the following noun is uncountable, I sometimes use 'a lot of'.

Seventh, 'several'. This means 'a relatively small number', but the focus is not on that it is 'small' (that's the purpose of 'few'). I often start my topic sentences with 'There are several reasons why x'.

In summary, these words are not synonyms. They all have a specific purpose. Don't chop and change them. Use them with precision. It will really help your structural sentences - your introductions and topic sentences especially.
