The bar chart illustrates the number of apartments which received approval for construction in four Australian cities from 2012 to 2016.

Overall, there were noticeable variations in the figures for all the cities in the study, yet all of them witnessed a general rise in their number, with Sydney having the greatest change. Moreover, the quantity of approved apartments in Sydney and Melbourne was markedly higher than that of the other two cities.

Focusing on the cities with the highest numbers, we can see that Melbourne took the lead in 2012 with around 17,000 approved apartments. Having witnessed a slight drop to 15,000 in the next year, the figure for it increased sharply to about 24,000, before slightly dipping again in 2016 to approximately 22,000. By comparison, Sydney came a close second with 15,000 in the first year, but its count grew steadily over the next 2 years by about 2,500. After this, however, the quantity of approved apartments in this city had skyrocketed to a chart high of virtually 32,000 by the final year, overtaking Melbourne.

However, the figures for Brisbane and Perth were relatively lower, yet they both showed a similar pattern of change. Although Brisbane saw its number rise from roughly 8,000 to 14,000 and Perth from about 3,000 to 6,000 between 2012 and 2015, they both experienced a fall by a thousand in 2016.
