You must first
1. Find out your current band score
2. Set a realistic goal with regard to your desired score
3. Set a deadline for yourself regarding when you take IELTS
4. Count how many days you have to prepare for the exam
5. Plan your preparation process. Keep in mind that if you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.
6. Spend at least 6 hours on English!
7.Take actions! Actions speak louder than words. Promise yourself and stick to it! You need discipline to keep going not motivation! This is because motivation will last for a week or month at most and then it will wear off. That's why just discipline yourself!
8. Take a piece of paper, write down today's date and the day you take the test as well as how many days you have. Write down your current band score and the score you desire to achieve. Write down inspirational words that remind you of your promise that you made about IELTS. Put this paper on a frame and hang it somewhere where you always look at it (study table is the most appropriate one). In this way, it will become a reminder for you whenever you feel down or want to give up.
Now a list of activities that you can do to crack your targeted score:
1. Listening improvement
* Listen to podcasts
* Watch YouTube videos
* Listen to audiobooks
* Do listening practices twice a week and analyse them
* Watch a movie/cartoon once a week ( on Sunday)
2. Reading improvement
* Do only one reading passage every day. Learn new words. Analyse it
* Read articles and translate every single new word that you come across. Write down words that you find necessary and important to use in your speaking and writing
* Get into the habit of reading at least 10 pages of books in English in order to boost your comprehension.
Vocabulary – Learn new words from articles/reading passages. Spend 1 hour and learn at least 15-20 new words actively on a daily basis.
3. Speaking improvement
* Speak to yourself and try to think in English
* Read sample answers and learn topic-related words and get some ideas to speak in part 3
* Make your own part 1, 2 and 3 sample answers
( Mon/Thurs: part 1 – 1 hour
Tue/ Friday: part 2 – 1 hour
Wed/ Sat: part 3 – 1 hour)
On Sunday, just relax :)
4. Writing improvement
* Learn how to write essays
* Write a task 2 three times a week ( because it accounts for two-thirds of your overall writing score)
* Write a task 1 twice a week
* Copy down Simon's sample essays (both task 1 and 2)
* Analyse those essays. But how? Analyse them in terms of
a) Grammar
b) Structures
c) Vocabulary
d) Ideas
* Run a blog and keep a record of your English journey!
If you want to achieve something, you should sacrifice something! Every goal is attainable as long as you have the wish to reach it!
insha'Allah, you can and you will do it. If others are able to accomplish it, why can't you???
And it is totally okay to have 2-3 days off once a month since we are humans and we tend to get tired of doing something repeatedly. At those times, try to do something that's not related to English. That way, you will recharge your batteries and start to miss English!
