Here is an essay I wrote 2 or 3 weeks before my exam. I don't think that I wrote a lot more different one in the real exam.
Some people hold the view that ideas and information should be completely open, and there should be no controls on what people can read and watch in the media (TV, newspapers, Internet).
Do you agree with this view, or do you think that in some circumstances governments should limit the freedom of the media?
In the last decade, coverage and spread of the media has grew so widely that now people can not imagine their life without it. If a person needs information on certain topic, he or she can easily browse the internet or book to find it. There is a common belief that things we watch on the internet or TV and read on newspapers should have neither limit nor control. However, I argue that governments should have supervision over the media and explain why.
A growing number of people think that limiting the freedom of massive media can lead to increase of dangerous ideas. They claim that when there are bodies which supervising the content, individuals hesitate to express themselves openly, even if their ideas do not aim to harm others. For example, a person who is going to spread religious materials may be worried about weather it is legal or illegal. So he or she shares them in secret ways. As today there are a lot of religious organizations are trying do the same with really perpetrator ides, it becomes hard to distinguish between good and bad contents.
However, in my opinion, officials should control at least the contents related to certain age groups. In other words, people, especially youngsters, may watch or read information that is not suitable for them. As small number of parents check what their child is getting from the media and there is an increasing number of violent and sexual content on the social networks, possibility of the young to learn about them id do high. According to psychologists, this may lead to having mental disorders when they grow up. All of these means that someone must have control of the media, at least in order to bring up healthy generation.
In conclusion, although freedom of the media is crucial to avoid problems, such as mixing of both good and bad initiatives, I believe that it cannot be completely free, due to its coverage of all age groups. Personally, I think it can benefit more if the media in under control of responsible bodies.
