What is paraphrasing?

Paraphrasing is the process of re-writing a piece of text by changing the vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structure, but not changing the meaning of the original text.

Read and understand the text.
You
cannot paraphrase a text or an idea if you do not fully understand it. If necessary, read the text several times to ensure you understand.

Identify the key words
These words are essential to maintain the same meaning in your paraphrase. Therefore, unless you can think of an exact synonym, these words often do not change in the paraphrase. However, it is possible to change the word form of key words.

Keep specialised vocabulary
These
are the words that you cannot change when you paraphrase. For example, jargon words and names such as ‘World Trade Organisation’ or ‘international law’.

Use synonyms
Change
words for other words with the same or similar meaning.

Change the language features of the sentence.
For this, you can change the sentence structure, word form (e.g. produce to production), and possibly voice (e.g. use active voice instead of passive voice).

Compare your paraphrase to the original
Do
this to check that the meaning is the same, and to check that you have used your own language.
