Studies have found that the level of happiness and well-being has declined among old people as most people at this age do not exercise and enjoy family company as much as their parents did. Reasons for this vary, and so do the solutions, which will be discussed in the following paragraphs.

To start, the chief reason why fewer elderly people are content with their lives and in good shape has evidently to do with changes in social structure and norms. That is, the growing appeal of single life is partly to blame for higher divorce rates, which ultimately means loneliness for retired people. This sharply contrasts with the past when divorce was frowned upon and people found happiness in having a loving family. Today, however, old people seem to prefer solitude over the pressures of having to provide for your family. Technology, as well as helping improve the lives of many, has brought on discontent and poor health among old people. Were it not for technology, people, old ones in particular, would spend more time outdoors and take up some form of exercise for entertainment. It would also mean younger people would share more time with their seniors like the old days when old people were regarded as counsellors and great storytellers.

Given the alarming nature of the situation, solutions have to be effective and swift. One immediate measure is revitalizing family values through government tools. This, in essence, entails launching social campaigns and making policy reforms that makes divorce the least attractive option after a certain age such 40 - the age when most adults experience mental episodes of anxiety and crisis, which makes them prone to separation. Furthermore, nurturing fitness and health culture among old-age demographics is sure to raise healthiness levels among this target population. This can be done by facilitating easier access to sport facilities and health centers, which clearly requires government funds.

In conclusion, while it is true that old people today are less happy and healthy than before for the reasons mentioned above, some solutions include shifts in social paradigm through government intervention and giving old people unconditional privileges to health and fitness facilities.
