I wrote the essay below with my students from my ongoing Writing Course yesterday.

Tourism is on the rise now, as travelling around the world has become more affordable than ever. Also, every country is endorsing this practice and welcoming as many tourists as necessary. Granted there are certain disadvantages to this trend such as potential environment problems and traffic congestions; however, I believe that the advantages of international tourism are greater.

It makes sense to think that travelling excessively across different countries is disadvantageous. Tourism can pose environmental challenges to the host country and the world as a whole. An influx of tourists means a great number of airplanes since they are the only means of travelling internationally. As a result, the fumes that come from these planes are probably resulting in higher levels of air pollution in the country that tourists have set their sights on. Another problem associated with the easy access to travelling globally is increased congestion caused by the large number of tourists. For example, in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan, there would be almost no traffic jams 50 years ago when the tourism industry was not as powerful, but these days drivers have to wait for hours on end to even finish a 10-minute ride. Thus, the host country can be subject to several damages caused by this seemingly wonderful opportunity, international tourism.

On the other hand, there is an array of benefits that can outweigh the above drawbacks. Firstly, an impoverished country such as Uzbekistan will have the opportunity to improve its economy thanks to frequent visits from wealthy tourists. In other words, improved tourism can create better-paying jobs such as guides and hotel receptionists who know a foreign language. Even better, it can help improve the public sector, from schools to hospitals. In addition, the image of the country can be developed among its counterparts. This tends to happen when the satisfying visitors genuinely fancy the place after their visit. That way, world peace and better relations across the countries might be established.

Although travelling across the world has its fair share of drawbacks, namely problems relating to the environment and traffic, I think that the advantages of this activity can transcend these issues by boosting the host country's economy and reputation.
