Israeli envoy presents letter of credence to Erdogan after years of strained relations

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan received the credentials of Israel's Ambassador to Turkey Irit Lillian at the presidential complex in Ankara on Tuesday, as the two countries continue to normalise ties after four years of diplomatic strain.

Senior diplomat Lillian has served as Israel's charge d'affaires in Ankara since January 2021 and has played a major role in restoring full diplomatic relations between both sides.

Ankara recalled its ambassador and requested Israel's previous envoy Eitan Neah to leave Turkey in 2018 over violent border protests on the Gaza border.

Turkey and Israel agreed to begin on the road to restoring full diplomatic ties and reappoint their ambassadors in August.
