Let's always keep in mind that the journey of knowledge, for the seeker, is endless.

No heroic words, just note to ourselves.

• how social media copies gambling methods 'to create psychological cravings'

Some social media apps, for example, design themselves to produce dopamine releases like slot machines, conditioning us to anticipate notifications so much that we feel phantom notifications at random intervals. We might even feel anxiety or very mild withdrawal-like symptoms if we go too long without notifications.

How to eliminate the negative effects of notifications?

Here’s a bold idea: Turn off notifications for everything.
This is the obvious solution that none of us actually want to consider.
We might be slightly deterred by the manual effort required to hunt down and change settings for dozens of apps and services, but it’s more likely that we’re deterred by fear.
We’re afraid of missing an important notification when we need it most.

AMERICAN vs BRITISH SPELLING

"cheque" "check"

Candidates who took the test on the 20th August understand why I am writing this post. I am sure some of you had difficulty deciding between these two options in the Listening component.

So, make sure you are aware of the following list to avoid such situations when you would have to make an agonizing choice!

#joketime

- Are you good at telling jokes?
- Yes, my friends told me that you are a joker.

#vocabulary

JOKING AND HUMOUR

1. tell a joke or crack a joke (informal expression)
Never "say a joke"
e.g. Before starting my speech, I told a joke to make the audience laugh.
e.g. My sister’s so funny; she’s always cracking jokes.

2. crack up or burst out laughing
= to start laughing suddenly in response to a joke or funny situation
e.g. My father always tells jokes that make everyone crack up.
e.g. Everyone burst out laughing when I tripped and fell on my face.

3. hilarious=extremely funny
e.g. The last comedian who performed was hilarious. I couldn’t stop laughing.

4. I don't get it = don't understand
e.g. Everyone else laughed at that line in the movie, but I don’t get it. Why is it so funny?

5. A joke fell flat = joke was unsuccessful
e.g. I told a little joke during my job interview, but unfortunately it fell flat.

6. just kidding = only joking, not speaking seriously
e.g. She is very tall, and I used to say that I felt like I was dating a giraffe – but I was just kidding.

7. tease someone or make fun of someone (to make little comments about someone, rather funny but may be slightly insulting or embarrass the person)
e.g. I always tease my husband about not knowing how to fold a shirt properly.
(light / friendly teasing)
e.g. The kids at school teased me a lot because I was fat.
(teasing that makes the person feel bad)

No laughing matter, don't joke about something that deserves more serious consideration!
