Intelligence is certainly among the many characteristics a good leader should possess. Some people go as far as to claim that this is the most significant quality in this respect. Although I agree that it is indeed significant, other qualities should be regarded equally highly.

Clearly, an intelligent leader can enormously benefit the company or organization they work for. To start with, their competence and outstanding problem-solving skills bring them the respect of their coworkers and add to their credibility. This, in turn, can make managing their company or even team easier. In addition, emotional intelligence, which is a largely overlooked and downplayed form of intelligence, is also vital for leaders in any position. Whether they are a top executive or a junior manager, understanding people’s emotions and motivations well helps to build better relationships at work and create a more satisfying work environment. Undoubtedly, such benefits of having an intelligent leader contribute to the organization’s health and success.

However, this is by no means an indication that all other qualities are less important. A visionary leader, for example, is also a pillar of continuous innovation and growth in the organization. Without the leader’s ability to set the right targets, any organization is likely to show only a mediocre performance at best. A co-founder of Apple, Steve Jobs, managed to build one of the most successful enterprises of today’s world not only because of his sheer intelligence but also thanks to his forward-looking ideas and vision. Another key quality is a strong work ethic. This encourages fellow workers to stretch themselves to their limits and achieve seemingly impossible feats. Hence, it would be unreasonable to single out intelligence as the key quality for a leader.

In conclusion, there is no doubt that intelligence is an important trait for any leader. However, other qualities such as overall vision and diligence also play an equally significant role.
